Virgil and Dante observe hypocrites in the 8th circle of Hell
In Dante’s Inferno hypocrites are found deep in hell, forced to walk in circles while wearing golden robes that are in fact gilded lead.

There’s a handy device for determining status in American society: whether someone feels obligated to abide by his or her own COVID rules.
The true masters of the universe, the people who imagine themselves the great and good without which society can’t function, are the ones who preach but don’t practice, who mandate but don’t comply.
Hypocrisy, like racism, has simply become background noise in the Sturm und Drang of life in woke America. Hence there’s no outrage, no real upset about it anymore. It’s simply a given. Hence we observe but are left speechless in the face of the elites cynical flouting of their own rules and standards: the maskless Obama birthday bash, Rashida Tlaib’s whirling around maskless on a crowded wedding dance floor in “code orange” Wayne County where the CDC guidance calls for indoor masking.

That she does so on the same day she took to Twitter to trash Rand Paul for not taking COVID seriously in his state just ads to the glorious sanctimoniousness.
Then of course there’s Governor “only a political skeptic could find a reason to disbelieve Christine Blasey Ford” Cuomo who is (credibly) accused of sexually harassing 11 women. He who said at the time of the Kavanaugh hearings “we owe it to the American people to #BelieveSurvivors” hired people to help him discredit his accusers. And did I mention that one of the people hired to portray them as liars was Roberta Kaplan, one of the founders of “Time’s Up,” an organization founded to eradicate sexual assault and harassment in the workplace?
And who can forget Nancy, of the very important hair, who managed to get a cut and blowout in a salon closed to the rest of the public at the height of the COVID panic? They mock us, our elites.
